{"id":809,"date":"2020-12-22T04:05:14","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T04:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artattackk.com\/blogs\/?post_type=digitalmarketing&#038;p=809"},"modified":"2024-06-28T11:50:19","modified_gmt":"2024-06-28T11:50:19","slug":"systems-usability-scale","status":"publish","type":"digitalmarketing","link":"https:\/\/artattackk.com\/blogs\/digital-marketing\/systems-usability-scale\/","title":{"rendered":"SYSTEMS USABILITY SCALE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cUsability is not only about ease of use but also about bringing something meaningful, having an objective in common with the user.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Marcus \u00d6sterberg, Web Strategy for Everyone<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>STANDARD VERSION OF THE SYSTEMS USABILITY SCALE<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/obp\/ui\/#iso:std:iso:9241:-11:ed-2:v1:en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISO 9241<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Part, 11 &#8211; Usability of a system can be measured only by taking into account the context of use &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is using the system?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are they using it for<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environment in which they are using it in<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also defines Usability as the extent to which a system, product, or service can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, it is clear that a scale measuring the usability of a system, product, or service should measure 3 factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Effectiveness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Can users achieve their objectives?)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Efficiency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (How easily can users achieve these objectives?)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Satisfaction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Were users satisfied to use the system while achieving those objectives?)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the measures of effectiveness and efficiency are subjective. An example that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/System_usability_scale\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mentions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effectiveness in using a system for controlling a continuous industrial process would generally be measured in very different terms to, say, effectiveness in using a text editor.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to this subjectiveness, it is difficult to say that the former is better than the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Brooke\u2019s Systems Usability Scale, developed in 1986, offers a high-level subjective view of usability thus allowing comparisons between two distinct systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ADMINISTERING THE SYSTEMS USABILITY SCALE (SUS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artattackk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/001_Administering-The-Systems-Usability-Scale-Sus.webp\" alt=\"USABILITY SCALE \" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Systems Usability Scale is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Likert_scale\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likert Scale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has 10 questions, requiring participants to rate each question from 1 to 5.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 meaning that they strongly agree with the question, and 1 meaning that they strongly disagree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 10 questions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think that I would like to use this system frequently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I found the system unnecessarily complex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought the system was easy to use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think that I would need the support of a technical person to be able to use this system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I found the various functions in this system were well integrated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought there was too much inconsistency in this system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would imagine that most people would learn to use this system very quickly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I found the system very cumbersome to use.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I felt very confident using the system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I needed to learn a lot of things before I could get going with this system.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>SCORING ON SUS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the participants have ranked each of the 10 questions, it\u2019s time to determine the score of the system, product, or service on the scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each of the odd-numbered questions subtract one from the score allocated by the participant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each of the even-numbered questions subtract five from the allotted score.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a participant fails to assign a score to a question, assign the score as 3.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add each of the new values arrived after the above subtraction\/addition, and multiply the entire score by 2.5.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result will be a score out of 100. It is important to remember that this score is not a percentage, but a clear way of seeing the score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MEANING OF THE SCORE<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A score of 68 out of 100 is the average score on the Systems Usability Scale. Any score below 68 is below average and it means that your system needs more work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ONE-DIMENSIONAL<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The SUS yields a single score on a scale of 100, thus being one dimensional. This single score can be beneficial to compare usability amongst completely dissimilar systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/221099434_The_Factor_Structure_of_the_System_Usability_Scale\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewis and Sauro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researched to challenge the unidimensionality of the SUS. They concluded that questions 4 and 10 were testing a factor other than Usability as opposed to other questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Question 4: I think that I would need the support of a technical person to be able to use this system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Question 10: I needed to learn a lot of things before I could get going with this system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The above two questions measure the Learnability of a System rather than the Usability of the system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewis and Sauro suggest that the SUS be used with the existing 10 questions, rather than dropping questions 4 and 10. This will result in a cleaner way to get an estimate of perceived Usability (with questions 1 to 3 and 5 to 9) and an advantage of getting an estimate of perceived Learnability (with questions 4 and 10)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Brooke described the Systems Usability Scale as a quick and dirty way to check the usability of a system, product, or service.\u00a0 Based on the above article it\u2019s sufficient to say that it\u2019s quick but far from dirty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article is a part of a series of articles.
