{"id":866,"date":"2020-11-30T09:12:13","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T09:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artattackk.com\/blogs\/?post_type=uiux&#038;p=866"},"modified":"2024-07-17T09:21:42","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T09:21:42","slug":"step-6-in-ux-design-evaluation","status":"publish","type":"uiux","link":"https:\/\/artattackk.com\/blogs\/ui-ux\/step-6-in-ux-design-evaluation\/","title":{"rendered":"STEP 6 IN UX DESIGN \u2013 EVALUATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i>The First Law of Usability: Your design will be tested by users \u2014 your only choice is whether to run the test yourself before launch so that you can fix the inevitable problems while it\u2019s cheap instead of playing expensive catch-up later.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&#8211; Jakob Nielsen<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By now you have an implemented interactive prototype. It\u2019s time to run evaluations on this prototype. Evaluations come in two forms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heuristic Evaluation: Heuristic evaluations are based on previously agreed rules of thumb.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User Evaluation (User Testing): User evaluations are based on usability tests, heuristics, and user requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article is aimed at Heuristic Evaluation. This evaluation is necessary before user testing to knock out the big and obvious problems with the interface. User testing is useless if you already know that your design has issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heuristic evaluations are one of the most used methods of evaluation in the early stages of design. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dialogdesign.dk\/heuristic-evaluation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rolf Molich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defines Heuristic evaluation as, <\/span><b><i>\u201c<\/i><\/b><b><i>A usability inspection in which one or more evaluators compare an interactive system to a previously agreed list of heuristics and identify where the interactive system does not follow those heuristics.<\/i><\/b><b><i>\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With heuristic evaluation, we do not aim to perfect the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artattackk.com\/website-designing-company-india\/\">design<\/a><\/strong> and interface altogether, but find big interface issues before user testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jacob Nielsen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Rolf Molich<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\ndeveloped a set of usability heuristics in 1990, and Nielsen released them in his book <\/span><b>Usability Engineering <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following are the 10 Commandments as developed by Nielsen and Molich:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>VISIBILITY OF SYSTEM STATUS: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can the users always tell what is going on with the system? This can be achieved with appropriate feedback in a reasonable time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>MATCH BETWEEN SYSTEM AND REAL WORLD: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are the<br \/>\nmessages displayed in a way that users understand rather than what developers speak? Does the information appear in the natural order?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>AESTHETIC AND MINIMALIST DESIGN: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the design allow users to easily<br \/>\nbrowse through the information, or do the users have to move around complicated design?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>USER CONTROL AND FREEDOM: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do users feel that they are in control while operating through the interface? Is it easy for them to back out if they make a mistake?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>CONSISTENCY AND STANDARDS: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are inter-design and intra-design consistency maintained? Does the design interface match the industry standards?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>RECOGNITION RATHER THAN RECALL: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do users have to remember things? Or does the design present them with information whenever and wherever it\u2019s needed?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>FLEXIBILITY AND EFFICIENCY OF USE: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are<br \/>\ncustomizations and shortcuts available for expert users?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>ERROR PREVENTION: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a confirmation option before a user takes an action that might lose his\/her data? Is it possible to make it absolutely impossible for users to get into trouble?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>HELP USERS RECOGNIZE, DIAGNOSE, AND RECOVER FROM ERRORS: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do error messages precisely indicate the problem, use plain language and constructively suggest the solution<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>HELP AND DOCUMENTATION: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is documentation easy to<br \/>\nsearch, task-focused, and brief?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>HOW TO APPLY HEURISTIC EVALUATION TO YOUR DESIGN?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artattackk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/01-How-To-Apply-Heuristic-Evaluation-To-Your-Design.webp\" alt=\"HEURISTIC EVALUATION\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose a part of your interface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walkthrough it with fresh (evaluator\u2019s) eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply heuristics to each step.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find a potential issue: Note down the issue, its<br \/>\nlocation, and consequence. Move on.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per Jakob Nielsen and Rolf Molich heuristic evaluation is to be done by at least 5 evaluators. They base this on the observation that 1 individual can find up to 1\/3rd of potential issues, but a group of 5 people can find almost 3\/4th of potential issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Remember: Your main goal is to identify potential issues during evaluation. Not to fix them.\u00a0 Fixing the issues comes after the evaluation is completed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another set of heuristics are the cognitive engineering principles developed by Jill<br \/>\nGerhardt-Powals for better human-computer interfaces. In her 1996 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.co.in\/scholar_url?url=http:\/\/www.portaldeconhecimentos.org.br\/index.php\/por\/content\/download\/47250\/608540\/file\/Gerhardt-Powals1996.pdf&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=IgC-X7TxMqXEywTdhrKQDw&amp;scisig=AAGBfm122Hf3-HI-wohJOUsberh3dpLESw&amp;nossl=1&amp;oi=scholarr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gerhardt Powals described cognitive<br \/>\nengineering of an interface as,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cCognitive engineering of a human-computer interface is the leveraging of empirical findings from the cognitive<br \/>\nsciences and application of those findings to the design of<\/i><i>\u00a0the interface.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>The 10 cognitive design principles, or heuristics, developed by Gerhardt Powals are:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2785\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artattackk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/02-The-10-Cognitive-design-principles.webp\" alt=\"cognitive design principles\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>AUTOMATE UNWANTED WORKLOAD: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminate mental calculations, estimations,<br \/>\ncomparisons, and any unnecessary thinking, to free cognitive resources for high-level tasks.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>REDUCE UNCERTAINTY: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Display data in a manner that is clear and obvious to<br \/>\nreduce decision time and error.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>FUSE DATA: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring together lower-level data into a higher level summation to<br \/>\nreduce cognitive load.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>PRESENT NEW INFORMATION WITH MEANINGFUL AIDS TO INTERPRETATION: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New information should be presented within familiar frameworks (e.g., schemas, metaphors, everyday terms) so that information is easier to absorb.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>USE NAMES THAT ARE CONCEPTUALLY RELATED TO THE FUNCTION: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Display names and<br \/>\nlabels should be context-dependent, which will improve recall and recognition.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>GROUP DATA CONSISTENTLY AND IN MEANINGFUL WAYS: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within a screen, data should be<br \/>\nlogically grouped; across screens, it should be consistently grouped. This will decrease the information search<br \/>\ntime.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>LIMIT DATA-DRIVEN TASKS: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use color and graphics, for example, to reduce the time spent assimilating raw data.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li>INCLUDE IN THE DISPLAYS ONLY THAT INFORMATION NEEDED BY THE OPERATOR AT A GIVEN TIME: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exclude extraneous information that is not relevant to current tasks so that the user can focus attention on critical data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>PROVIDE MULTIPLE CODING OF DATA: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system should provide data in varying formats and\/or levels of detail in order to promote cognitive flexibility and satisfy user preferences.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u00a0PRACTICE JUDICIOUS REDUNDANCY: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Principle 10 was developed to resolve the possible conflict between Principles 6 and 8.
